Nine Thorns players competed in France. That’s a large milestone for the club, and we wanted to capture the energy of the tournament and showcase our club and players to a global audience. Our initiative was to create a brand campaign that followed our athletes’ trip across the Atlantic. In the end, four Thorns players brought the trophy home to the United States. From there we adapted our campaign accordingly. The jersey’s design elements; the stark contrast of black and red, rose patterns and the red striping became our strongest design elements. The halftone pattern is prevalent in the rose imagery. The red accents are subdued in areas where it creates focal points around the composition. The seasonal creative has been applied to social, web, video, merchandise and even in-game presentations. I was asked to help him design an app he’s been planning for a few years. The app organizes, shoots and even edits your photos in real time. A catch all app for users who want a unique style applied to their photos. The kicker for this app is the use of influencers from all over the globe. The app would emulate the styles of each influencer and sell their aesthetic in a built-in shop. I built the interface and branding for this project. The 2020 pandemic ultimately cancelled our season so we’ve had to pivot a lot of our keystone ideas into the digital space. In the last few months of 2020 we were lucky enough to see the Timbers participate and win the MLS is Back Tournament. During that tournament and the months following we were able to get our 10th season back on track. The cornerstone of the season was the expansion of Providence Park. The expansion raised the capacity to 25,218 and added a multi-level façade to the East Side. The use of the East Side roof and the 2019 home jersey was our main inspiration for our seasonal creative. The seasonal creative has been applied to social, web, video, merchandise and even in-game presentations. Travel restrictions and no in-stadium fans takes a toll on the sports industry. Nevertheless, the 2021 MLS Season continues and so did the Portland Timbers. The seasonal creative leaned heavily on the 2021 home jersey. The two-tone use of our primary green and new night green is a strong element in our creative. We also pulled graphics from the kit trims and applied a regal look. An homage to what some of the fans call the squad—the King of Clubs. The powerful pink aesthetic is the first of the club’s 15 MLS jerseys to sit outside their traditional color palette, and first in pink. Our objective was to pay homage to Rose City by developing a bold & unique pattern and stay authentic to the city & Timbers fans. The design process led us to a jersey that both fans & players will wear proudly for Rose City. The creative team used this jersey as their inspiration for all graphics including digital content, in-stadium and print collateral.
